I have been meaning to write about the recent draconian cuts to NIH funding for "indirect costs." Today, I came across this post by epidemiologist Dr. Katelyn Jetelina (who you should definitely follow) that is one of the most accessible, nuanced, and succinct discussions on the topic. She explains what indirect costs are, how large this cut would be, and what it will mean for the research, students, and employees at these institutions. Dr. Jetelina is no blanket defender of the status quo; she agrees that some cuts and reforms may be necessary, but this new policy is reckless and destructive.
